Tests Are Over (If You Want It)

December 11, 2013 drewrozell 10 Comments

One of the things I really like about my life is that I am done with tests.

I’ve taken enough of them through the years. And now I am done.

Done done done.

(I can even write in fragments. And start sentences with “And.”)

No one else has the power to pass me or fail me.

No one else gets to tell me where I rank.

No one else gets to decide what I can or cannot do.

No one else gets to determine what I can or cannot have.

No one even gets gets to inform me how healthy I am.

No one or no thing gets to measure me on some metric that means nothing to me.

In lieu of tests, I make decisions as to what I will have and what I will experience.

And I revel in the power of choosing the course of my life.

It’s a wonderfully free feeling. A true high that I highly recommend…

Not so long ago I thought the Universe tested me from time to time. (And I see this as a rather common “spiritually correct” belief.)

Just like in grade school, I believed that if I failed these tests from the Universe, I was doomed to repeat the lesson until I “got it.”

While that belief was helpful to me at the time, I know now that the Universe only amplifies whatever I choose to bring to the table. At the time, I still believed in testing, so the idea of a testing Universe seemed logical, and so I saw the evidence to support my belief of a testing U.

Eventually, the idea of “passing tests” grew so tiresome that I decided to let it go and when I did, my life became a whole lot easier.

No one got to choose for me. I could not fail or get it wrong even when I failed or got it wrong.

My experiences of the Universe reprimanding me by wrapping my knuckles with a ruler the size of Texas evaporated. Instead, the Universe became the perfect partner, unfailing reflecting both what I have chosen in my life as well as what I have not yet been willing to choose for myself.

On the other side of tests?

A lot less drama. A lot less striving. A lot less proving.

A lot more ease.

And a lot more allowing.

And buckets and buckets of more freedom.

The best moment of my life

Vortex
Vortex

I lay across the bed. Parallel to the headboard. It’s mid-afternoon.

The mattress is a Tempur-Pedic Cloud, and it’s aptly named. It’s crazy comfortable. I sink in and my whole body relaxes.

I’m not alone.

My daughter lay next to me. She’s cooing and kicking, playing with her rattle. She’s very happy.

I hear the rainwater trickling though the gutter; a very pleasant white noise. The birds sound pleased to have a bath.

It’s a quiet day. The clouds serve as our blanket. There’s nowhere to be, nothing to get done.

I squeeze Ella’s perfectly chubby thighs, tickling her, and she laughs her staccato laugh. When she looks at me with her smiling eyes, I am… connected.

Coco the cat makes her warm nest on my stomach. She closes her eyes and purrs. My hand glides over her soft fur. And again.

I think to myself how wonderful this moment is… How everything feels so good. How comfortable and satisfied the three of us feel.

I bask in the feeling for a couple of minutes. That’s all it takes. I am drunk with fulfillment.

This is the best moment of my life. Ever.

Until the next one.

The 80/20 Rule for Drama

May 13, 2013 drewrozell 3 Comments

Had a thought talking to someone yesterday…

This woman was talking about drama in her life/business — emergencies, problems, an endless string of fires that need to be put out…

She was aware of it, she didn’t like it, and she didn’t seem to know what to do about it.

And in a flash, it occurred to me that a modified version of the 80/20 rule (80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes) can be applied to the amount of drama you experience in your life.

Here’s how…

We all have stuff to do, right?

Well, a lot of drama seems to be borne out of unfinished business. Loose ends… Things completed 80% of the way before moving on to the next thing.

When you do something 80% of the way, of course, that leaves 20% unfinished.

And when you have lots of stuff 20% unfinished, not only is that going to occupy a lot of mind space, in some cases that unfinished 20% can come back to bite you in the ass (like paying your taxes, for example).

It’s understandable why you move off a given task before finishing it completely. Again, we all have lots of stuff to do…

But there is no version of a very cool life that incorporates drama over an extended period of time.

Do complete work.

Tie up loose ends.

Do less, but do whatever you’re doing completely, whether that’s emptying the dishwasher or writing a book.

And see what you notice in terms of your level of ease in your daily life.
