Dollars and Senses: What would you do with your windfall?

June 21, 2008 drewrozell 1 Comment

Was dreaming/feeling/intending the other day.

What would feel really good to allow into my life?

Hmmmn.

In a material sense, nothing really was getting me supercharged. Sure, I can conjure up a new Lexus sports coupe or a lodge on a quiet lake. All that would be keen… But there’s no real spark there right now.

My belief is that a very cool life has three, feeling-level components: 1) freedom, 2) ease, 3) and connection.

As I sat in thought, noticing what popped into my mind and what felt best, I pictured myself rising from bed in the morning. At a feeling level, I was free to do whatever I desired; there was nothing I HAD to do for the day.

Now, to be clear, I am not exactly a slave to the rat race now. I have created a life that is filled with much more freedom than most people experience. I do not work to support a lifestyle. I am not worried about making ends meet. I enjoy my work and I have enough where I say no to most anything that does not feel good (e.g., clients who aren’t a great fit, etc.)

But freedom is intoxicating. The more you experience, the more you desire.

So I thought about where I felt obligated in some way… Where do I carry debt?

I paid off my credit cards years ago (thank God) and I paid off a home equity loan that I used to buy some land. I have a few thousand remaining on my grad school loans and I have a 11 years left on a 15-year mortgage.

However, homes are relatively cheap where I live. I can easily picture manifesting a check that would allow me to have a mortgage burning party sometime soon. (I try not to think of HOW this would happen, just connect with the feeling of receiving the money).

Paying off my mortgage? That would feel delicious to me. Again, I don’t feel like a slave to my home now, but it would just feel great to wake up beholden to no one (yes, there’s taxes to deal with, but I have enough passive streams to handle those easily).

So I mentioned my thoughts to my friend Warren… that if/when I got this check, I’d pay off my mortgage. I got tingly just sharing this with him.

Now Warren is a top-notch numbers guy (as we know, I am more of a feeling guy). We go about things very differently and both produce pretty good results. As I shared my little dream, Warren interjected:

“Dude, there’s no way I’d let you do that.”

I know Warren well enough to understand where he was coming from. He always has my best interests in mind.

My mortgage has a 5% interest rate. There are lots of places to get a much better return on investment (e.g., a S&P 500 index fund historically returns around 10% per year). So, from a numbers perspective, Warren was absolutely right, I’d be better off investing the windfall elsewhere.

But weighing the two options, significantly bumping up my numbers in my investment portfolio or being completely debt-free, I come to the same conclusion: being debt-free would FEEL MUCH BETTER.

Further, I believe that awaking each morning with that feeling of total freedom would snowball and that money would follow that feeling. In fact, I believe that over time I would attract even more money than I would from investing.

I do not believe there’s a right or wrong decision here, just the truth of what one resonates with. And no, as of this writing, I’ve not attracted that windfall to have to make this decision right now.

But it’s fun to put my awareness here and feel into the possibility of it all. It’s an intention that I can feel at a deep level.

And I am curious… what would you choose to do in this situation?

Feel free to share in the COMMENTS if you are so inclined.

best,

d

hi Drew! i really enjoyed this post. i’m curious as to what, if anything, you’ll do next to attract the money to pay off your mortgage. did you write out an intention statement? just keep the desire in the back of your mind? search for any blocks? hmmm…i think the topic for tomorrow’s conscious conversations call was just born..

    thx!
