November 2009

Welcome, my friend!

Good to connect with you again.

October was lovely. The month included a trip to Arizona with my wife for several days of training and inspiration as well as a visit from my brother Ned and his family. Of course things culminated with my beloved Yankees winning number 27, and I will miss the entertainment of baseball until the spring.

The short days have me itching to snap in to my skis and spend some time on the mountain. I’m all geared up, ski pass in hand. Would love to get out West this year, too. Let me know if you’d like to meet up on the slopes…

This month’s feature, How to Decide, came out of my experience travelling to Arizona. I believe the lesson I share inside will provide you with a simple and practical framework that you can begin practicing in your life immediately.

I hope you find it valuable.

Finally, I am super excited about the new intensive program I will be offering for men, called 40PX. Details below.

Thanks for your support and your time.

Really.

HOW TO DECIDE

•

I jousted with Captain Kirk for weeks, logging on to Priceline.com trying to secure a rental car for our upcoming trip to Arizona. Every few days, William Shatner would let me down easy, informing me that my bid was too low, but not to worry, I could try again later. As the time of our departure became imminent, and with the rental companies standing their ground on prices, I bucked up to secure a car. I went with a compact, figuring we would have the opportunity to upgrade later.

Standing at the rental counter in Phoenix to pick up our car, the salesperson made his pitch. Would we be interested in a Lexus SUV?

Normally, I would dismiss the offer out of reflex as I do with the upsells on extra insurance and pre-paid gas. But the man had uttered a magic word: Lexus. I love driving a Lexus. I owned one. While I’m not a car aficionado, I do love quality and I love how being behind the wheel of a quality vehicle like a Lexus makes me feel.

And so, I bit.

“How much extra a day for the Lexus?” I asked.

After some furious pounding on the keyboard in front of him, the clerk said it would be an extra $15 a day for the upgrade. With our trip lasting five days, I did the math in my head. To travel across the desert in style would cost me an extra $75.

I took in the offer and paused. I wanted the Lexus. I knew that.

In my hesitation, the thought brigade began its march through my mind.

I’ve already paid more for this rental car than I expected.

We’ve just started the trip, and there’s many more expenses ahead.

We won’t not be driving much –it’s only two hours to where we’re going.

This negotiation with myself made me indecisive. I turned to my wife.

“Do you want the Lexus?” I asked.

She shrugged, leaving me alone with the decision.

After another short pause, my old pattern of thought put its signature move on my desire, pinning it to the ground for a count of three, claiming another victory for Team Status Quo.

“No thanks. We’re fine with the compact,” I told the clerk, my voice rising at the end in the way people talk when they are trying to convince themselves of something.

I felt the twinge of disappointment as he handed me the keys informing me of the uninspiring model and make of the vehicle we’d be traveling in.

As we made our way to the car, the thought returned.

We won’t be driving much.

While this fact was accurate, it ignored the truth. I wanted what I wanted. I just failed to allow it into my life.

The generic brand car waiting for us was fully equipped – it had dings, scratches, stains, and a funky smell thrown in for good measure. The car would get us from A to B, but in no way reflected my personal value for quality. We rolled down the window to let the strange odor waft out of the vehicle and hit the road.

Our destination was a conference where we would spend our days immersed in wealth creation. Information, ideas, and inspiration flowed freely at the event. To keep myself from reaching information overload, I usually approach these seminars with the intention to take one idea home with me and focus on implementing that into my life.

This time, that One Thing happened to be the very first words out of the speaker’s mouth on the first day.

“Make decisions from the place where you want to be,” she said.

Of course, I had heard this piece of wisdom before. Hell, I had taught it to hundreds of people. It certainly seems simple enough, right? However, there are some prerequisites for being able to implement this advice.

First, you need to be clear on the bigger vision for your life. You’ll need to take the time to answer the question of what you really want to create for yourself. Second, you’ll need to raise your awareness to recognize those moments-of-truth, the real-life situations where your old habits of thought lead you away from that higher version of yourself. Finally, choosing something new requires courage. Upgrading your life requires you to make decisions in the face of your fears, not the absence of them.

I was in the audience because of my desire to make much more money from my coaching, writing, and speaking. In short, I want to be a million dollar coach. As I wrote down the speaker’s words about making decisions from the place you want to be, I thought of the Lexus I refused.

Would a million dollar coach travel in a scuzzy rental car? Would a million dollar coach hem and haw over $75? Clearly, I made my decision from my conditioned beliefs and lurking fears about money, not from my intended destination.

Very often, the practice of making decisions from where you want to be will push our buttons around money. Without question, if you wish to attract more wealth into your life, you will have to make changes in your beliefs and actions around money. Does this mean you should spend like Lenny Dykstra just because you want a fancy new house or a car?

This is an important question and there’s a very clear answer. When it comes to spending money (or any other decision that presses your buttons), let your feelings be your guide. This requires you to pause long enough to look inward for your true response to a situation. In my example, my feelings told me I really wanted the Lexus for an extra $75. I certainly could have afforded it, but I chose to ignore those feelings. If the car were offered at an extra $40 a day, my feelings would have guided me in another direction. (The quality of my rental car is not that important to me. Spending in a way that does not honor what you value does not feel good.)

Again, your feelings will guide you. You need to take on the responsibility for tapping into them and trusting them. Remember, the first step is to decide where you want to be. Write it down (if you do not write it down, you’ve decided nothing). Now that you know where you are going, the next step is to show up to your life with the courage to make decisions that are aligned with your true self. Those decisions take practice, but the good news is you are already equipped with the guidance system to make them, your feelings.

<< * MY NEW PROGRAM | FOR MEN ONLY * >>

Quick question…

What kind of shape are you in?

Really now… be honest with yourself…

And yes, I’m talking about your physical condition… but I’m talking about more than that too… You’re not getting any younger, you know… Are you really where you thought you’d be at this point in your life?

I bet I know the answer…

So, back to the question…

Are you a little “loose in the cage?” Gone a little soft? Have you put your life and work on cruise control for a while?

Hell, all things considered, I bet you’re still doing pretty dang well — I bet life is GOOD. Or at least, GOOD ENOUGH.

But what if NOW was the time to change that standard in your life?

WHAT IF “GOOD ENOUGH” was no longer good enough?

What are you REALLY capable of?

Could you be… dare I say it… GREAT?

Are you willing to find out?

40XP is my new program designed to separate the men from the boys. 40XP (the XP is short for Extreme Program) will be a 40 day intensive program for men who are ready to see what they are really capable of creating in their lives.

40XP will focus on 3 specific areas:   BODY • MIND • WORK

If you’re ready to inspire yourself again…  if you’re ready for a challenge …  if you’re ready to work, to learn, to sweat, to become a Badass Man, then you might be ready for 40XP.

* A Book, A Movie, and an Album*

• A Book: Where Men Find Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman.

Was always interested in the Pat Tillman story from the day he gave up NFL millions to enlist in the service. Was particularly interested that one of my favorite writers, Jon Krakauer, took on his story. This book sheds light on the disgrace that was done to Tillman, his family, and the citizens of the U.S. (and world) through the lies of the U.S. military and government. I cannot say I enjoyed the book — if anything, it angered me. But I am glad I read it. Veterans deserve better.

• A Movie: UP (2009).

Watched this one on the plane to Arizona. Even on a six inch screen, this animated Pixar film was everything a movie should be — creative, entertaining, poignant, fantastical, laugh-out loud funny, touching… just plain brilliant. I have no problem admitting a shed a few tears on the plane, too. If you do not enjoy this film… well, we have vastly different tastes in movies. See it!

up

• Another Movie: The Kite Runner. Was not expected much here. Knew of the book’s huge popularity, but had not read it. And of course, movies are seldom as the book. While that’s probably the case here too, the movie was very well done. Serious film. Poignant. And yes, I cried a little during this one too.
