I’m on a Pearl Jam kick lately.
I’m particularly stuck in the song in the video below, The Fixer.
Certainly, the melody hooked me the first time I heard it a few years ago…
But the lyrics are pretty cool as well and are speaking to me now (I’ll post them below).
In Eddie Vedder’s words, “This is a reminder song to me, to stop fixing.”
A reminder that works for me as well…
Working at home with a toddler doing his thing and being someone who likes things just so, countless things in my environment draw my attention.
However, I notice that when I focus on how things are “not quite right” or “broken,” things start to go south rather quickly.
The problem – the resistance – comes when I see aspects of my life as broken and in need of fixing.
The very thought of having to fix something does not feel good, clear feedback to me that when I choose this perspective, it’s moving me out of alignment with how I really want things to be.
Because nothing is really broken, even when it’s broken.
Choosing thoughts of brokenness with only lead you to see and experience and endless loop of brokenness, things that need FIXING, until you shift your focus.
(Have you ever had one of those days when one thing after another seems to break or go sour? This is what I’m talking about.)
So why go through all that?
If you can be okay (note that you don’t have to LIKE it) with the things that appear to be broken around you and you can develop of clear picture of how you want things TO BE (rather than condemning HOW THEY ARE), you are well on your way to what you want.
You can skip all the struggle, all the brokenness and move right into what you want.
And yes, that’s takes awareness and practice… so be it.
I know for me that the trickiest part for me can be the thought of “Well, if I don’t fix this thing, who will?”
(A truly miserable, heavy feeling thought.)
The big leap is no longer being caught up in this question or even curious about the answer.
The big leap is living and knowing that it’s already done.

When somethings dark, let me shed a little light on it
When somethings cold, let me put a little fire on it
If somethings old, I wanna put a bit of shine on it
When somethings gone, I wanna fight to get it back again
Fight to get it back again
When somethings broke, I wanna put a bit of fixin on it
When somethings bored, I wanna put a little exciting on it
If somethings low, I wanna put a little high on it
When somethings lost, I wanna fight to get it back again
Fight to get it back again
When signals cross, I wanna put a little straight on it
If there’s no love, I wanna try to love again
I’ll say your prayers, I’ll take your side
I’ll find us a way to make light
I’ll dig your grave, we’ll dance and sing
What’s saved could be one last lifetime
